Composite Process for Plastic Decorative Coating

07 Sep, 2026
Single vacuum coating or single spraying cannot satisfy high end aesthetic and durability demands for many plastic decorative components. The composite process combining UV spraying and vacuum metallization gains wide popularity for cosmetic packaging, automotive interior trims and smart device housings.

Single vacuum coating or single spraying cannot satisfy high end aesthetic and durability demands for many plastic decorative components. The composite process combining UV spraying and vacuum metallization gains wide popularity for cosmetic packaging, automotive interior trims and smart device housings.

Pure vacuum metallization directly on raw plastic tends to generate particle defects and poor surface smoothness. Pure spraying can only simulate metallic visual effect without genuine metal texture. The composite stack structure achieves mirror grade metallic appearance, outstanding chemical resistance and scratch proof performance.

Standard production workflow includes six key steps. First, loading and electrostatic dust removal to eliminate micro particles on workpiece surface. Second, flame or plasma surface activation to raise surface energy and improve coating adhesion. Third, UV primer spraying and UV curing. UV primer covers tiny substrate defects and builds ultra smooth base for subsequent vacuum metallization. Fourth, vacuum metallization inside high vacuum chamber; metallic target vaporizes and deposits thin genuine metal film. Fifth, transparent UV top coat spraying and curing. The top coat seals metallic layer from oxidation, fingerprint stain, scratch and chemical corrosion. Sixth, visual inspection and finished product packaging.

The whole composite production loop must run inside dust free clean rooms. Tiny dust particles will create point defects on finished surfaces. Production cycle matching between UV spray line and vacuum coating machine significantly affects overall production throughput.

Most common engineering plastics such as ABS, PC, ABS PC blend and PMMA fit this composite process well. Heat sensitive or low surface energy plastics may require special pre treatment or become unsuitable. Key quality testing items contain multi layer cross cut adhesion, salt spray resistance, pencil hardness and accelerated aging test. Compared with single vacuum coating, composite processing adds primer and top coat procedures, leading to higher unit cost yet superior comprehensive performance.
